You give out practice questions during class and then collect them. Now comes the dreaded grading. If you just give it a check mark grade was the purpose of this activity really to see what they learned during class or was it just busy work. If you spend the time to check every answer that could take more hours of your already stretched time. If you allow students to self grade, well, will the be honest and learn anything from that experience?
So, what do we do? In comes self grading google sheets. While, there are many virtual options to choose from ( think google forms, boom cards, TPT easel cards, etc) to help with the self grading part. I really love self grading google sheets for short form questions and IMMEDIATE visual feedback. They can be applied in all types of classroom settings with both numerical AND verbal answers.
Let’s take a look at one that I created:
As students are answering the questions, the picture begins to appear with each correct response. If they don’t answer the question correctly then no boxes will be shaded in. In this type of activity students can work through some independent practice problems, get immediate visual feedback, you get to circulate or sit with a smaller group of struggling students AND take home less grading! A win – win for everyone!
