Making Graphing Fun

In every math and science class from PreK on there is graphing to be done. We look at all types of graphs and charts and while the stories we tell to make these graphs might change, there is always a worksheet. Maybe some colors. Maybe a poster. Maybe we even get digital. But how else can we teach graphing, let students show what they know and make it more interactive?

Let’s try getting big and maybe a little messy. If you have the available space in your room, use your walls or your floors. Or head out into the hallways and use the wall and the floors there. And then hand students washi tape or painters tape in different colors (something that is easily removable), some sticker paper and one problem set. Then let them go and see what they can create.

By allowing them to display in large format what they can do, it allows others to also see it. This can provide a space for peer feedback, other teacher feedback and a general sense of investment in their work since it will be on display. You can then turn this into a gallery walk for the other kids in the class or if you have multiple sections have different sections look at each others work.

Take a look at the examples below:

Some students might get more creative than others, but they all display they work and take the time to make sure everything is included.
